문화공간 피크닉과 건축 큐레이팅 콜렉티브 CAC가 공동 기획한 〈힐튼서울 자서전〉은 1983년 완공 이후 40여 년간 서울의 국제화를 상징했던 힐튼서울의 탄생부터 해체까지를 기록하고 기억하는 전시다. 건축가 김종성의 설계 도면과 서신, 철거 현장에서 수거한 자재, 호텔 관계자들의 증언, 그리고 동시대 작가들의 재해석이 어우러져 한 건축물의 생애를 다층적으로 조명한다. 테크캡슐은 참여 작가로서 철거 현장을 밀착 기록한 영상 〈상실의 기준〉과 힐튼서울 전체를 3D 스캐닝하여 디지털 공간으로 이행시킨 〈잠재 생동〉을 선보였다. 철거란 단순한 사라짐이 아니라 무엇을 남기고 무엇을 보낼지를 결정하는 선택과 배제의 과정이며, 자본의 논리로 진행되는 철거의 시간은 사회적 합의를 기다려주지 않는다. 두 작품은 힐튼서울이 하나의 장면이 아닌 여러 가치와 기억이 겹겹이 얽힌 복합적 과정 속에 있음을 보여주며, 우리가 어떤 기준으로 공간의 흔적을 지켜내고 또 어떤 것들을 망각 속으로 흘려보내는지 질문을 건넨다.
Ground Truth in Loss is a video work that closely documents the demolition site of Hilton Seoul. Latent Vital transfers the entire building into digital space through 3D scanning. Demolition is not mere disappearance—it is a process of selection and exclusion, deciding what to preserve and what to let go. Yet the pace of demolition, driven by the logic of capital, moves too swiftly for society to reach consensus on what is worth remembering.
Through these two works, TechCapsule shows that Hilton Seoul exists not as a single scene but within a complex process where multiple values and memories are densely intertwined. The works ask viewers by what criteria we safeguard the traces of a space, and what we allow to drift into oblivion.
The works were exhibited as part of Hilton Seoul: An Autobiography, co-curated by Piknic and CAC (Curating Architecture Collective). The exhibition traces the life of Hilton Seoul—a symbol of Seoul's internationalisation for over forty years since its completion in 1983—from birth to demolition. Architect Kim Jongseong's design drawings and correspondence, materials salvaged from the demolition site, testimonies of hotel staff, and contemporary artists' reinterpretations come together to illuminate the building's life in multiple layers.
