As part of the Seongbuk Cultural Foundation’s urban archiving project Seongbuk Memory Loop: Home, the book Reading Jeongneung, Diaries explores the urban history of Jeongneung and its influence on local culture and the arts. Cities reflect and shape the lives of their residents, and artists have captured Jeongneung’s unique landscapes and life stories in their works, uncovering new meanings. For poet Shin Kyung-rim, the alleys of Jeongneung served as a space to reflect on his mother’s life; sculptor Choi Man-rin’s studio became an everyday art space. Artist Park Go-seok enjoyed Jeongneung’s natural surroundings, while expressing the complex emotions of a solitary, peripheral life in his writing and paintings. The works and records of these artists add new layers to Jeongneung’s history, serving as keys to understanding the city. Documenting and interpreting Jeongneung goes beyond mere preservation; it is an effort to re-illuminate diverse lives and rewrite the city’s context, a promise to remember the meaning of our lives.
