Seokgwan, Connecting is a publication produced by TechCapsule as the second volume in the Seongbuk Cultural Foundation's urban archiving project Seongbuk Memory Loop – Home. The book unearths and connects the historical strata of Seokgwan-dong and the traces of artists who have lived and worked within them. This land, once home to the royal tomb Uireung, was transformed into the forbidden compound of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency. Its high walls and unofficial regulations became an invisible shadow suppressing the development of the entire neighbourhood. When the intelligence agency relocated in the mid-1990s and the Korea National University of Arts moved in, the labyrinthine buildings—originally designed for surveillance and control—became a paradoxical source of inspiration for young artists, who turned spaces of oppression into sites of free creation. This energy spilled beyond the campus, evolving into a cultural community built by students and local residents under the name Dolgoji. Like its toponym—Dolgoji (石串), meaning stones threaded together—the book weaves narratives of royal authority and folk belief, oppression and freedom, disappearance and documentation into a single trajectory. It aspires to serve as a guide and a starting point for those who wish to understand the history and places of Seokgwan-dong and to carry their own creative work forward.
