‘Geondeulgae’ is the old name for Geonip-dong and also refers to ‘Geonippo,’ the former name of Jeju Port. As a region that has long served as a gateway connecting Jeju to the world, Geonip-dong is rich with history, culture, and the stories of the people who have lived there.

The Geondeulgae Story House is a place that preserves and shares these stories. The narratives presented here are particularly meaningful because they are based on records compiled through the dedicated efforts of local residents who cherish Geonip-dong. Since the first publication of Geonip-dongji (建入洞誌) in 1996 to the establishment of the Geonip Museum in 2010, residents have continuously worked to uncover and document the area’s history. In 2021, these valuable records were revived and showcased once again through the newly renovated Geondeulgae Story House.

The collection includes approximately 1,600 artifacts, either donated or gathered by Geonip-dong residents. Currently stored in a traditional stone warehouse (dolchanggo), these materials will gradually be revealed to the public through special exhibitions. These exhibitions will serve as valuable resources for understanding the daily lives of people in Geonip-dong and Jeju. Through the exhibition “Reuniting with Geondeulgae,” we hope to learn from the rich history of this region and envision a more vibrant future for Geonip-dong together.
