Commissioned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Historic City Regeneration Division, the Documentation of Urban Manufacturing in the Cheonggyecheon Area was a collaborative project carried out by three teams—guga urban architecture, Place Memory Project, and TechCapsule. The project comprehensively surveyed and documented the alleyways, buildings, and interior workspaces of the urban manufacturing district across four blocks surrounding Cheonggyecheon within the Sewoon Redevelopment Promotion Zone, a district rapidly disappearing under redevelopment. For over fifty years, individual construction had been restricted in this area. Its occupants autonomously repaired and modified their spaces, producing a unique urban topography that conventional surveying and administrative systems failed to capture. The three teams worked in close coordination: guga urban architecture conducted built-environment surveys and analysis, Place Memory Project led humanities research and artefact collection, and TechCapsule performed 3D scanning and spatial data processing. Together, they produced an integrated body of documentation encompassing survey drawings based on 3D spatial data, VR content, interviews, and on-site artefact archiving. The project sought to reveal the physical reality of spaces that factories and workshops had created by transforming traditional houses within the old urban fabric, and to leave behind a record of this irreplaceable urban landscape.
